Hero Electric, a subsidary of the Hero group will be foraying into the electric car segment with the launch of an e-car by 2013. This news comes on the heels of Tata announcing that it would introduce an e-Nano and Mahindra too declaring plans of introducing an electric car in the near future. Hero has already tasted success in electric bikes and is now looking at cashing in on the demand for low operational cost vehicles due to rising oil prices. The Hero electric car will not run on conventional battery but on capacitors which can be charged instantly and would give higher mileage at a lower cost.
India's being a power deficient nation does not present a very strong case of electric vehicles. Maybe manufacturers are trying to build a green image by launching showcase e-cars while the primary revenues continue to come from mainstream fuel guzzlers.
