Audi's latest supercar the R8 has had an amazing run in the international market having sold out it's entire production of 2,952 units till date. Even in it's home market Germany, there is a several month wait for a new R8. Audi's 2008 allocation of 15 R8's for India have already been booked even before it's official launch in November. The R8 is priced at Rs 1.3 crore in India and will be imported directly from Germany. Audi also doesnt have a test drive R8 so buyers have put down the high booking amount based on their perception of the car and international drive experiences (if any). For those who arent able to get their hands on the R8 there are alternatives available in India such as the Porsche Carrera S, which is a bargain at Rs 86.05 lakh. The Mercedes SL500 is also an able rival priced at about Rs. 1 crore.
Audi on the whole has started doing very well in India and currently sells its A8, Q7, A6, A4 and TT models here. In the first seven months of 2008, the company sold 595 units, against 226 units over the same period last year. Audi has seven dealerships across the country, which it wants to expand to 12 by 2009.
